I love Katy Perry's hair in her music video for "the one that got away" (I'm also in love with the song <3) and I've been thinking for a while if I should cut my hair like that. I'm staying with my natural blonde hair (for now) but I adore the 70's and want something kinda choppy. What do you think? Can choppy be low maintenance and still chic?

Also, I've come to the realization that I have the weirdest dreams....last night I was in my back yard with my aunt and her dog and I went into my garage and found my lost prada glasses (oh how I wish that were true) and came out to find her with a squirrel on her shoulder explaining to me that we need to "save the baby squirrel" that had just hatched from a plastic egg on the ground....wtf? World, meet my unconscious. I should analyze my dreams for psych hehe. Try connecting that to sex and aggression Freud! Wow I've been studying my psych book for too long...

I don't know about you, but I have never aspired to look like my grandmother. Not that I don't love her, but I prefer not to age myself sixty-five years. So why does the world of fashion want us to look like a group of old biddies?

At first look, Bottega Veneta's fall ready to wear collection is 'inspired' by the sixties, updated by new textures and fabrics. But after a full perusal, it seems as if Tomas Maier took a trip through his grandmother's closet. It was a line up of turtlenecks, suits reminiscent of old Chanel, and little girl white tights. Now, I know that Tavi brought about the 'little girl gone old' mentality, but seriously. I enjoy being seventeen (almost legal, baby!).

So thank god for Diane Von Furstenburg, and especially Emporio Armani. They realize that not every girl wants to look like a woman past her prime. The clothes are modern, sophisticated, and have a touch of humor. Everything mixes textiles and patterns to look very young and fresh. I know it's in a darker palette for fall, but come on. I certainly don't want to wear a cotton candy pink turtleneck. But hey, that's just me.

What do you think? Is it time to grow up or do you embrace your age?

Let Your Hair Down

You've heard many a-time: what goes around comes around, particularly in fashion. This season is no different, with 70s inspired looks ruling the runways. Chloe seemed to take a cue from Marc Jacobs a few seasons past and created oddly shaped pants with enough volume to hide a small elephant paired with a pee-yellow button down. Normally I'm a huge fan of Hannah MacGibbons (Chloe's head designer) for her soft take on the 70s. In previous seasons her neutral colors and attention to detail elevated the collection from thrift store wanna-bees. But it seems that she's lost her love of subtlety, and wants to hit the consumer over the head with her intention. She might as well have thrown on some printed patches and called it a day.

Despite my bashing, I really do love this new look in fashion. The 70s had a wonderful bohemian sophistication; the women never seemed as if they were trying. "Yes, Darling. I just threw this on and am this fabulous." Maybe it's because the 70s had some of the most flattering fits and cuts of any era. Because jeans were flared, hips looked smaller in comparison. Because shirts were looser on top or had bell sleeves, those of us with little chest had something to distract from our lack of cleavage.

I now find myself scouring vintage stores for 70s clothing or 70s inspired clothing. I love how something as simple as a white button down becomes transformed with large sleeve or an embellishment. I feel the whole point of the 70s was not to look 'done'. Naturally beautiful, age appropriate, and always stylish was the name of the game.

On a Eastern seaboard road trip with the family, I tried to discover which college would be right for me. What I really found was why I need ear plugs on family trips. Oh well, you can't except enlightenment every time.

In other news, my cheerleading team and I will be featured in Inside Cheerleader magazine. Their August issue is all about back to school and I'm really excited to pick it up before school starts!

Uniforms

I've gotten to thinking about uniforms. Maybe I'm obsessing because I am desperately awaiting my cheerleading uniform, but still. Is a uniform really a plaid skirt and button down top that one is expected to wear the same way every single day? If we all wore the same thing, would we really stop judging each other by appearance and focus on personality?
Style shows force us to fear. Are we projecting the right image? Do our outsides match what is inside? As a complex person, it is difficult to express your full self in a few items of clothing. And yet as a society we are obsessed with how we look, that we present ourselves in a certain manner and that people know exactly who we are and what we stand for by looking at us.
So uniforms. They're supposed to level the playing field. If we no longer have a physical outlet of expression maybe we'll actually interact with each other rather than making judgements based on appearance.
Alright, I'll admit it. I love uniforms. I love the idea that an outfit can connect you to a group of people and really righteous idea. I understand the counter arguments about stifling self expression, but isn't it really self expression when you are given the same pieces of clothing as everyone else and make it your own? Teen magazine have at least one or two articles a year about how to accessorize a uniform in order to individualize it. I feel that uniforms are about being a part of something bigger, yet there is still room to be oneself.

The point of this photo shoot was to showcase innovation and to ask questions. By using a garbage bag as a piece of clothing, I hope to show that going green is just another way to be creative and to express one's self. I would also have you note the background, whether it be recycling and garbage bins, spillover of clothes, or a dirty, unkempt yard. These try to highlight the pollution plaguing our planet. But most importantly, I hope that these photos make you ask yourself: How much is too much?

Fashion is an art form; a melding together of desire, shape, and form. As Anne Hollander says in her book Sex and Suits: The Evolution of Modern Dress, “[clothes] have managed to embody these ideals in shapes that appeal to the erotic imagination, playfully combining aspiration with sex and humor, virtue with the delight of line and shape”. Fashion began as a way for people to make themselves more attractive. The French aristocracy became powerful enough to determine what was ‘in fashion’ at the beginning of the 19^th century. The more clothes a person had, the more wealthy and influential they were. But rather than promote an aristocratic society, fashion helped foster democracy and equality. With the invention of department stores, people of all economic levels were allowed to shop together. Though some were not able to buy, they could “touch, even when they could not purchase”. A consumerist culture was created. According to the author of The Empire of Fashion, Gilles Lipovetsky, people became like vultures. They hovered around stores, waiting for clothes that were newer and better than ever before. They felt as if the only way they could be happy was to consume (Nussbaum). The consumer culture traveled across the Atlantic Ocean to America in the early 1900s (“History of Fashion”). Retailers in the United States began holding fashion shows, telling the American shopper what they needed to purchase next.

The world now faces the consequences of this consumer culture. The ever-changing nature of fashion forces us to believe that we must throw away “last season’s” clothes, for they are not as valuable as those of the “now.” Therefore, America creates millions of pounds of waste for fashion. Previously, every single aspect of creating clothing polluted the environment. Even textile companies would incinerate fabric samples or surplus designs so that other companies could not steal their ideas (Drake). So what is an environmentally concious person to do? You cannot stop wearing clothes, unless you decide to join a nudist colony. Thankfully, there are consumers like you, people who do not want to pollute the earth every time they get dressed. A recent study in Hong Kong found that “38 per cent of respondents ranked environmental and social issues in their top three purchasing factors” (Hills). If consumers start to demand more sustainable, Earth-friendly clothing, then companies will be forced to comply. They cannot sustain their business without someone buying their product.

Already, some businesses have begun eco-friendly practices otherwise known as practicing Green Fashion. Green Fashion simply means that companies create their products in the most environmentally friendly and sustainable way. Some examples of Green Fashion include: “eco-friendly fabrics that necessitate less energy and water or non-toxic vegetable dyes, [and] recycling previous years’ ensembles into a whole new fashion collection,” all of which were used by the students of the School of Fashion Technology (Sardesai).

The key is to be able to distinguish what is Green and what is not. Not all designers label their fabrics as recycled on the label, so it is up to you as the consumer to understand what is environmentally friendly (Valigra). Some companies claim that they use “all natural” fabrics. Silk maybe a natural fabric, but many business kill silkworms in order to produce the fabric, rather than using “ahimsa silk”: which creates silk from worms that have died naturally (Sardesai). Besides checking how natural (or not) a product is, you as the conscious shopper must understand the different ways to be Green. Some products are biodegradable, carbon neutral, or made from sustainable materials (Wilson). Biodegradable means that once the clothing is thrown away, it will not sit in a landfill but decompose in the Earth. Carbon neutral tells the consumer that the amount of energy used to create the product is not enough to harm the environment. Carbon is responsible for Green House Gases, which erode the ozone and facilitate global climate change. Since almost all industries produce carbon when producing a product, companies who are carbon neutral are very rare. Finally, sustainable fabrics are harvested from the environment as not to harm the eco-system from where it was taken.

The newest and most used Green Fashion technique is recycling plastic to make fabric. Plastic soda bottles, which are made from polyethylene terephthalate (otherwise known as PET), are now being used to make all different types of clothes, like t-shirts, sweaters, or jackets (L). This new fabric is still considered polyester, but before polyester consisted of “polyethylene and terephthlatic acid, two petroleum-based chemicals” (L). The whole process of recycling soda bottles begins at your curbside, where all the plastic is collected and brought to a facility to be sorted from your other recyclables. The plastic is then crushed into bales and sold to the companies who will use them for fabric. Once they reach these textile companies, the bottles are ground into “dirty flakes” which are squares around a ¼ inch . These flakes then get a bath in hot water with caustic chemicals to get rid of any dirt and glue. The flake is now considered clean and is melted so it can be forced through a machine similar to a showerhead to create a fiber. All the fibers are bunched together to make a “tow”, and then finally all weaved together to create the item of clothing. Though it sounds long and complicated, the whole process takes around a half hour (Valigra). The best producers of this fabric is Malden Mills Industry, who was one of the first businesses to begin recycling plastic. In 1981 Malden declared bankruptcy, since they were unable to sell their textiles. But once introducing recycled plastic fabric, they are growing at a tremendous rate and looking to expand into Europe. They sell their product to Patagonia and L.L. Bean, and as the fabric becomes more and more popular they will continue to branch out to other retailers (L). The demand for PET (or Polartec as it would say on the tag) has grown greater because according to Karen Beattie, product-marketing manager at Malden Mills, “the strength, warmth, and durability properties of virgin and recycled yarns are the same. The only difference is that recycled yarns have a matte rather than [a] glossy finish” (Valigra). Plastic is about twenty percent or sixteen million tons of America’s waste (L), so the more we are able to reuse the less trash will pollute the planet.

Green Fashion is larger then just clothing, it is also a way to help stop our consumer culture. Clothing like “The Eight”, a suit similar to a giant, transparent jellyfish tries to call attention to the ecological danger all around us and the toxins we inhale everyday ("'Eight': Fashion Forward"). Fashion has the ability to promote all different kinds of green living and can take our ideas of eco-friendly from just theories to a lifestyle. By shopping consciously you tell the industries of America that you refuse to contribute to Global Warming, that the Earth and your continued existence on it matters. Fashion is a way for you to express how you feel, and it is time for us to stop saying that we feel fine as our planet is destroyed.

Too often people know all your business. The moments that are supposed to be private are broadcast to the whole world, and you're expected to be okay with it, because, well "that's the world we live in." But we shouldn't just brush it aside. As reality TV becomes the only program to watch, we're told more and more to be obnoxious, loud, and quite tacky. But life is not meant to be lived for anyone else. Maybe it's time to keep our business to ourselves and stop being so exposed.

Mixing prints is 'trendy' right now. And while at first I was apprehensive (Come on, mixing completely opposite in the same color doesn't work), I found myself really enjoying all the color and texture. Rather than just a piece of clothing, it felt like art. Pattern mixing isn't just checking for color, it's understanding how to textures and prints can complement each other. Just because two prints have the same shade of blue or both contain flowers does not mean that they will mesh. But the point of mixing patterns is have fun with your clothes, to be fanciful! It's no longer about how streamlined or sophisticated you can look, but how you can challenge yourself to view your closet in a new way. And while it might take longer to choose what you're going to wear when dealing with prints, the pay-off is worth it. With all that color it's hard to not be in touch with your childish side, it's like those days when you were little that your mother allowed you to dress yourself and you threw on everything in your closet. It's the joy of not looking 'perfect', of not having to worry if something is out of place because the print will camouflage any flaws. Hurray for prints!

This is our idea of the perfect summer. All we need is the beach and some sun. The Cocoa Boot is a California girl all the way. She's actually going there over the summer to study acting! I, on the other hand, struggled with this photoshoot. While I love summer I find that I always dress for fall. Everything that I picked to wear was black. Overall, the shoot reminded me of the recent video for Oliver Peoples' sunglasses, inspired by 70s and late summer.

She was a dancer and choreographer who pushed the human body beyond its limits and created some of the coolest movement ever! Dance can be such a great inspiration in fashion, with unusual ways of contorting the body, creating engrossing shapes which can be transformed into patterns, clothing, or anything your little heart desires.

I am so sick of the whole 'tough girl' look. I don't understand why women aren't comfortable being feminine. I think it all started in the 70s, during the women's feminist movement. Not that I think women shouldn't have fought for their rights, but that in fighting to be treated equal to men, they forget that their power lies in their femininity.

In society, a women is considered weak because she shows emotion. Tears mark her as the 'weaker' sex. But I don't see what is so less about expressing oneself. It has been proven that bottling your emotions can lead to serious health issues, so isn't a woman truly being stronger by admitting how she feels and allowing those emotions to make her vulnerable?

Furthermore, a women's power lies in her sex appeal. Women have the ability to read relationships and social atmosphere, and manipulate that with their feminine wiles. A former female finance reporter would enter Wall Street's 'Boys club' in a pencil skirt and pumps. She could lull CEOs and major finance executives into a fall sense of security, making them believe that she wasn't asking the hard hitting questions because she had breasts. But when the article came out, it revealed secrets that the men hadn't even remembered to admitting to.

And especially don't forget the women in your life (especially after Mother's Day!). My mother was a single parent for many years. She worked a full time job and then came home and took care of me. It is her strength that inspires me to be proud of being a women and all that means.

The best part of romance and crushes and love is the mystery, the first beginning moments when you see a cute stranger and imagine all the things that could happen. Maybe I live too much in my own head, but that is the time when that person is perfect, they are simply everything you want them to be.

That's why I can't imagine being Kate Middleton. There would never be any secrets, your life would have to be an open book, forever stalked by the brutal British press. She must really love William to put up with the constant attention. Or maybe she likes it. But I prefer to live by keeping my true feelings private, allowing that person to stay perfect a little while longer.

Inspiration is a strange thing. A simple idea for a little-girl-plays-dress-up photo shoot transforms itself into Alice in Wonderland, possessed and innocent dolls. I got this fantastic book on Yves Saint Laurent and after savoring every beautiful page, I had to share some of my favorite YSL photos with you. I absolutely love this designer! The book is literally called "Yves Saint Laurent" and was, as the book says, "made possible through the patronage of Madame Carla Bruni-Sarkozy". It's pretty much the ultimate YSL Bible.

Okay, I know it's kinda early to be thinking about prom, but while I was looking for some Valentines Day decor. ideas for my math classroom (yes, it is the only high school class I know that gives extra credit for holiday spirit too), I saw Anne Hathaway in this Marchesa dress for the Valentines Day Movie Premiere. I LOVETH IT! I'm guessing it's just the lighting, but I think I like the way it looks on Ms. Hathaway better. For junior year prom, I really want a shorter dress, and then senior year can be long, and I'm loving the feathers and the color of this one. :)

I am in love with the 70's and 80's. The music, the fashion, the freedom, the eras! And in the past couple months, the fashion world has been feeding my obsession by flaunting bell bottoms, maxi dresses, and all that is flowy and fun--remember, bell BOTTOM does not mean BAGGY. I know plenty of people who could work baggy jeans and look great, but personally, I definitely suggest investing in a pair of properly flared bottoms.

I never used to wear much jewelry, it was too difficult to write with rings on every finger. But accessories are like expensive drugs, but the high is longer and satisfying. Every time I see that little sparkle on my finger or catch sight of my necklace in the mirror, I can't help but smile. Normally I buy my jewelery while on vacation, so each piece reminds me of an adventure. Now, everyday I take a trip in my jewelry box, and come out with at least two rings and one necklace. My favorites have to be my two knuckle ring, and the giant moonstone from Cozumel (photos to come) and though they're both huge, I wear them everyday. I feel bad for anyone who makes me mad because they'll be forever branded with a starfish and weird studded pepper...thing.

There's something so refreshing about a clean start, it feels like anything is possible!

A Black Beauty

This post is for the reader who asked what would be a good stylish but appropriate outfit for a funeral. First off, I'm sorry for your loss. As I wrote earlier, I actually had to attend a funeral this past week, and I also just found out that a girl in my advisory's mother passed away. My fancier black shirt was in the wash, so I decided to wear my new Oscar de la Renta sweater dress, black tights, and my dark purple booties. It was simple, plain, but classy. And I think that's the goal. Even though I had color, it was a darker shade, and was very conservative. Though I would normally suggest keeping jewelry to a minimum, if you decide to wear all black, I think one small statement piece accompanied with less flashy accessories would be fine, i.e. earrings or a ring (like ozzie, the octopus ring I posted in "Footballin' Family" in November). A big necklace would not be desirable. Here are some examples, along with the outfit I wore. Remember, for once, you want to blend in with others and keep attention where it should be; on the one you've lost.

I feel like Zara always has good black options, and they're reasonably priced (there's a sale going on in a bunch of stores, and yes, Zara's one of them)

If you have any darker jewel toned tops or bottoms, I think they would go well with a black opposite, especially a colored blouse with a black skirt (not mini, of course)

I was going to do a post today, and I will do so later, but right now, I just wanted to say how sorry I am to my friend's family, who lost their beautiful little girl, Maggie, to a heart condition. She was 5, and she passed away on Christmas. If you don't mind, please try to take a moment out of your day to count your blessings and tell someone you love them, because you never know when it will be the last time. Sorry to make this dark post. I promise something more cheerful is on the way.

Just a few photos of my adventures in New York before I leave for Mexico! I know, it's hard jet-setting around the world, but someone has to do it.

If you get the chance to hit up the Lower East Side in NYC, do it. I cannot wait to be back on Ludlow and Broome, eating at Katz's Deli (pictured), wandering around Assembly (pictured. I love the way the clothes are strewn around the room, as if it was your own closet) and trying on clothes at TG-170 (more on that later). But the best part of New York is coming around the holidays, there is just so much cheer and spirit you would swear that it's the North Pole.

But almost better was Bloody, Bloody Andrew Jackson. I cannot even begin to describe how magical and incredible it was. The photo above does not do it justice. A completely new theater experience. Below it you can see my fangirl photo with the lead, Benjamin Walker. Yes, that enourmosly dorky grin hurt.

Myan ruins, the ocean, horseback riding, WARMTH! So, as you may or may not know, I'm fairly very tech-savvy, but when it comes to Apple products, I'm lost (even though I'm actually typing on one now). Thus I don't know if you've all heard, but apparently you can now download Vogue issues to your iPad. The above is the 1st one, UK's December issue, and I'm still conflicted about whether or not I like that or not... I mean, 1/3 of the reason I buy Vogue magazines is because I love the feel of the pages, the free perfume samples, and (only if it's exquisite since I hate to tear up my things) being able to cut out my favorite images to put into scrapbooks, collages, etc. ON the other hand, I think it's great that Vogue is attempting to be more Green and waste less paper, and now I might be able to convince more people to indulge in this splendid magazine. What do you think about being uber technologically advanced?

If perfection had a lookbook account, you'd be staring at it. There is nothing better than these swingy skirts and men shirts. I mean, lets start with the fit. These are clothes made to be worn and enjoyed! The clothes skim the body, hinting at curves and showcasing almost every woman's best feature, her legs. Yet they're not tight enough or short enough to cause concerned grandmothers to ask you if you forgot your pants (yes, this has happened before). Not to mention, the bright effervescent color! Forget Adderall, these are all you need to keep awake during those dreary winter days. But my favorite part has to be the easiness. None of these pieces match, none of them have a hundred layers. They are playful and young, something that clothes have forgotten these days. Sure, you can be sophisticated and look ten years older, but I fully enjoy being seventeen and intend to have my fun with it. Thank you Jonathan Saunders for a collection that is just plain (though there is nothing plain about it) glorious.

After a visit to my grandpa (who unfortunately has no internet) and other relatives, and 14 hours in the car (there and back) which meant lots of brainstorming, I give you my personal favorite wedding guest dresses :)

P.S. Remember that if you do not choose to go longsleeved, and you think you're going to get cold, a cardigan is definitely a stylish and practical option!

Personally, I adore this dress. It's conservative, elegant and not overdone. It flatters all shapes and sizes, and it also comes in a dark navy/black color.

The things I am grateful I cannot even begin to count. But! I will try.
Of course, you readers, who stand faithfully by this website between my crazy long hiatus(es) between posts. And for putting up with my rants. I mean, that's a lot to be thankful for.
But I'm also thankful for my parents, weird as they are, who stand by me and support even when they drive me nuts. That goes for my family in general. The thankful part as well as the making me insane part.
I'm so, so thankful to the opportunities given to me and for the chance to continue into the year with more appreciation for what I have.

So remember, even when the kitchen is filled with all the relatives you never wanted to see, take a deep breath and laugh. Because a little laughter goes a long way. Personally, I think it's the only thing that carries us from one year to the next. Look at the people around you and invite them to laugh, to spend time together in the most jovial way possible.

I don't know if it's the ironic hipster that lurks inside of me that is dying for a pair of shoes that look like they are already falling apart, but I can satisfy my rational self with those crazy high electric blue booties. Maybe I can change the name of this blog to The Blue Boot?

By the way, if you feel the need to break your ankles or crack a few toes on something higher than these bad boys, just look out for the sky shoe. They stand erect (there's a reason I call it show porn) at a full nine inches. Little monsters, rejoice.

So life is crazy. Now that I've dropped my personal bomb on you in my last post, I might as not hold back the ranting. But, I will. Because it's a Monday and no one needs that kind of negativity to start the week.

Giada, from Food Network is my personal goddess. When the world slowed down for a second, instead of merging into the couch and having a good old fashion veg-out to the Real Housewives of Beverly Hills, I got off my rump and did some good cooking. The meat was a little over cooked, but do not underestimate the power of coriander and cumin. Without them, I think my family wouldn't have let me cook again. My major suggestion to anyone who would want to repeat this recipe (remind me to post it on here later) is to replace the beef tenderloin with Angus steak. The meat was cheaper and even burned stayed fairly tender.

But the real star of the meal was the Mediterranean salad with cranberries. I made enough for six people (four people came for dinner) and at the end of the night barely had enough leftovers for one. Meet my go to Thanksgiving recipe.

Here are some supremely attractive photos of myself, taken at the Chicago Shakespeare Theater. Yes, my friends and I are that hipster- I mean, sophisticated. In fear of sounding pretentious I won't give you my run down of the show. It's not like I went to Oxford, England and saw the Royal Shakespeare Company or anything. And it's not like I fangirl scream every time I think about it. I'm too world weary and well traveled for that sort of non-sense.

Okay, this is really not fair; This is the 3rd time this year that I have lost my voice :( I have no idea what it is I'm doing to it that's making it run away! I drink oodles of tea, I don't do THAT much screaming, and one would think that singing every day would be good for the voice because it exercises the vocal cords, but noooo! Footballin' Family

Northwestern football is a big love of my family, particularly my mother--an alumni and faculty member--and my older sister--a current wildcat, plus my father is just a football lover in general so he's always happy when the rest of us express an interest in it. Personally, I prefer European football a.k.a. SOCCER, because I used to play it, but I really love all sports. Anywho, these are some pic.s of what I wore to the game against Iowa yesterday...just saying, NU won :)

Okay, if you're wondering why on Earth I have this awesome goldfish umbrella when there is no rain in sight, you're not alone--my family told me not to bring it since it "clearly wasn't raining"...few hours later, we all wanted it as rain-flakes (not cold enough to be snow flakes but not liquidy enough to just be raindrops) fell on us, so HA! (Oh and then there's the fact that umbrellas aren't actually allowed in the stadium. hmph)

Got these leggings a while ago, but I've been using them for my dance class so I usually keep 'em at school--They reminded me a lot of Balmain '09^Balmain^

Ozzie my octopus ring! Love this guy, but sadly, about a week after I got him, he broke, and after many attempts to fix him up, I finally got him to stay with 4 layers of this German brand of super-glue (on the bottom if you're wondering why you can't see it)

Sometimes, I forget how hard school is. There's that one moment in the summer, where all your traveling is done, but all your friends have left, and you're spending a beautiful sunny day watching TV in your basement, and you think "Gee, wouldn't it be nice if school started again? I'm so excited to see everyone..." and blah, blah, blah.

Then you get there and the hallways are full of people who can barely utter a coherent sentence and you have to brawl in the stairwells to get to your next class.

College is an ominous looming every figure. Every grade and activity answers to this unmerciful god. So you pile on all you can, trying to build your brag sheet, only to crushed under the incredible work load and responsibility.

If it seems like I'm ranting, I am. And if it seems like I'm overreacting, I might be. I guess I should confess that only this year I have been diagnosed with depression. It's been a struggle to keep calm during the day with the all pressure of daily life and keeping this a secret. I know there isn't as much of a stigma with the disease as their used to be, but it's a big deal to me. It's changed my whole life, and the way I deal with it. The world is bigger and scarier to me than it ever has been before.

I'm not writing this in order to receive a pity party, but in order to touch on something real. Fashion is frivolous in many ways, but it's an incredible outlet to express oneself. No matter how glum I may feel, I know that I can find something pretty to wear and it will always make me smile. Shallow? Yes. But I firmly believe it is about the little things, about how you choose to cope. For me, a sense of humor and a good closet is key.

So to everyone out there reading this who may be struggling with depression, I wish you good luck. I promise the world isn't as big and scary as it seems and you already have the tools inside of you necessary to get past this dark point in your life.

And to those of you who may blast me for taking this disease seriously when in just my last post I made jokes about anorexia and bulimia, I did not mean to offend. But that's not to say I didn't. But that does not mean that I will not continue to. I say what I think or, at least, what I think is funny. Sometimes it isn't, but that's life.

Don't let this discourage you from commenting! I love to hear your feedback, good or bad, as long as you're not rude. Seriously, I don't need that shit. I'm depressed, remember?

I'm so excited for this movie, I honestly don't even know why; oh wait, yes I do; it's got dancing, singing, hot guys, and fashion. I feel bad for anorexic girls. I've mad it a generally established fact that food is delicious. So if you're not eating it, you are missing out. I mean, really. Food is universal, cultures can come together over a dinner table, a single smell ignited by a stove can remind you of your childhood, and a taste can change your whole day. I firmly believe that I had to choose an eating disorder, I pick bulimia. At least then I get to taste it before I waste it.

This bruschetta is my own recipe. Find some good bread at the grocery store, I really sourdough, but just anything with a good crust. You need something that will support the toppings. Cut the bread into small, bite-sizes slices, then butter both sides. Turn a pan on low heat, pour some oil in, and saute the bread for a few minutes until crunchy.
The chutney I used was from a farmers market in Wisconsin, but anything that's sweet and has whole chunks of fruit in it will do. You don't want jam, because the texture and the taste of the chutney is richer and more complex (my personal favorite is the cranberry chutney from Le Pain Quotient in New York).
Finally, grate some Parmesan cheese over the top. Just a few flakes will do, it's just to contrast the taste of the chutney so it isn't too sweet.
This is definitely one of my favorite fancy snacks, I eat it when I just want to cook something, but don't want to put in a lot of effort. It takes five minutes, promise!

*If you want to add an interesting flavor, place a basil leaf on the bread before adding the chutney. It's definitely different, but be warned you either like it or you hate it.

So. The new house has no heat. After breaking blood vessels in my nose, you'd think a girl could come home to a little comfort. I guess I'll just have to get cozy in lots of layers. Maybe that's why I'm loving this "Granny" trend. It's probably the un-sexiest thing I've ever posted, but I love the idea of chiffon and layers upon layers. I'm dying to be an edgy lady who lunches. I guess that means my lunch would consist of crackers and pretenious cheese, but at least it's fancy pretenious cheese. Maybe I can sneak in some wine now that I'm SEVENTEEN. It's legal somewhere...

Anyways. Though the boy you're lusting may not want to put his hands on you while you're wearing any of these get-ups, at least you know your girlfriends will want to cuddle with you/steal your clothes.

What's In A Name?

Define Sarah: princess and fine lady. Sarah Schuette: actor, model, photographer, blah blah blah. I have always considered having one of the most common names in the world to be a curse; how can you stand out when there are millions of Sarahs, even multiple Sarahs who share my last name as well!

Even though I feel this way, I have decided to attempt to like my name. Perhaps it can be a good thing to have (at least a first) name that people can easily pronounce, and usually remember. And my last name is pronounced as a combonation of two of my favorite things; "Shoe-tea", plus "shootie" is apperently the nickname for ankle boots now, so Schuette's actually not that bad. I guess I never felt like the name "Sarah" fit, and though many times I thought of names I would rather be called, they could never replace the 17 years of memories I've had as a Sarah.

Why not own the name? Why not be added to the list of wonderful Sarahs? And besides, what's in a name anyway?

Girls in Sweater Dresses with Prints and Sunglasses

So I have been terribly infatuated with these two vintage Betsey Johnson dresses (the two at the bottom) for quite some time, and I realized that with the weather starting to get chillier around here, an update on sweater dresses would make a perfect post. Just Another Barbie Girl

11 inches of pretty plastic perfection. That's Barbie. Many people think she sets unrealistic standards for little girls and that she's "too perfect" and thus is a bad influence. Um, just because Barbie never has a pimple or a hair out of place or even a microscopic bit of jiggle, it doesn't mean she's bad. Barbie can be a confidence booster, a toy who's got it all and can inspire kids to strive for excellence too! Okay, okay, I know I sound like an ad. campaign that's full of bull, but seriously? Barbie is fashionable, fit, and, now that they've got Barbie movies, you can see that she's got a winning personality to match her gorgeous figure. (Note to self: stop being so cheesy).

So why all this talk about the doll? Well, I was looking at her 50th birthday fashion show on youtube when I saw a link to Barbie's Fashion Fairytale, so I clicked it and spent an hour watching link after link of the latest Barbie movie. In this one, Barbie plays herself instead of a storybook character, and after being fired from her acting job and thinking she's boyfriendless, she travels to Paris to be with her fashion designer aunt. The story continues and is filled with different fashion designs, magic, and a great moral at the end, as Barbie movies usually have. Even though I'm seventeen, I still love a good dose of make believe to keep me just a few inches off the ground.

Halle-freakin-lujah

Dearest readers and fellow bloggers, for the past month my computer has refused to let me view this page, not allowing me to post anything or to see my favorite girl PB's posts, and I couldn't figure out why! ERROR, it said. Um, not okay. My dad--aka the only person apparently able to fix it--had been traveling, mainly in Arizona, with his cousin. So I've finally accept my man repeller status. I've tried to put on sexy skirts and such, but no matter how tight my clothes, I can't deny that I'm seriously jonesing for a really big Afro. I want to tease the little hair I have so big that I have a hair battle with Snooki. Poof vs. Tease, who will win?

Some exciting news, just to keep you guys updated. I'm getting my head shots done, hopefully this weekend and putting together my resume. I'm looking forward to mailing everything out and getting started in this agent process. Maybe it's the excessive amounts of Entourage I've been watching, but more than I want an Afro I want to get back to acting. It's my first love and I'm so ready to be reunited with it.

Cozy Crochet

It's there, hiding. The leaves on the trees are turning golden, the air feels crisp, and the pumpkins are being left on doorsteps. Fall is playing hide and go seek, where the weather is close to Summer some days, and then a little tease of Autumn. It shakes it's branches at us like a little flirt, lets the leaves dance, then runs away and hides behind the sun or rain. All I want to do is see Fall in full force. That way I can grab a cup of hot apple cider from Starbucks and wrap myself in some cozy knits. Layers, layers, layers, it's my mantra until the weather cooperates and Fall stops being a wanton (i.e: skank)

Super Slut?

Seems like I've gone on a tangent lately, talking all about what it takes to bring a boy close. But I can't help it. After the last night of partying, I'm just ready to go back out there! And this time more readily equipped. My one tip: always wear boots. It's not a style thing, you shove all your crap in your shoe rather than you bra. Trust me, it's much more comfortable. Unfortunately, I don't have any pictures to show you because we had a strict no camera policy. But here are some photos of what I want to be wearing next time I go out. Whether it be for going clubbing, a fall barbeque, or the last beach party while this freak weather it's still in effect, these outfits are pure perfection.

Today, after breakfast, I hit up the local thrift store. Because you never know what you might find on a full stomach. Luckily enough I did encounter a little green velvet 80s dress. And while I did enjoy looking a Christmas tree, I loved the feel of the velvet even more. I know it's 'trendy' right now, and that Ashley Olson wears it like crazy bag lady, but there's something luxurious and rich about velvet. I probably should look up it's history and where it came from, but I'll leave that up to you. Just know that velvet is a beautiful addition to any outfit. It's sexy in a really understated way. And seriously, what better way to say: touch me?
